BORN SUSPECT IN AMERICA
I’d like to give the people who
fought for freedom, for myself and for millions of others their proper
due. I pledge allegiance to them all, because they knew this would be
our country through fighting and strife for our lives. I feel I must
express myself, to gain that respect that all God’s children should have
at birth. I didn’t know that the tears I cried for my mother’s milk,
kisses and hugs would take on a different turn — tears of fear. . .
I have no vices, for I’m just a
child, crawling around to the cabinets pulling out all the spices. Mom
caught me, she knew things just would be, so she said “What the heck” —
she didn’t think I was a suspect, but did know I had to be correct. A
few years later, after having been taught the golden rule, I was sent to
school to learn from the teacher. I saw my teachers weren’t the same
kind — their skin was different than mine. They tried to teach me what
they could, and I can say it did me some good, for I rose up out of the
hood, and found I was out there with a lot of other potential suspects
not yet full grown — still in retrospect, I was Born Suspect in America.
. .
In my America
I’ve heard of diversity, yet I can’t see in corporate America, the banks, and not in the executive
ranks, but we’re the first in the prison system, which is a revolving
door for the needy and the poor. We the poor have no jobs, so there are
no checks to pay our debts, because – we were Born Suspect in America. .
.
Please America; see the light and
wake up to make it right. You know we’re in every profession from
doctors, scientists, builders, lawyers and designers, and have done it
all, whenever we get the call, so let us live without having to get up
against the wall!
Let this world be better for all
mankind, from the front to the back of the line. It’s really time to
get this in your mind and stop racism and bias of any kind. This
country must be a color blind society to get that feeling of healing for
all the open wounds. Our time is up for hope; we must have our good
news, for our lives are full of bad rules leaving us filled with the
blues. Let’s put all that negativity to rest, let me live as a man —
Not as a Suspect!
